This Barbie Is Trying, Okay?!

I am a very unique individual in saying that I saw the Barbie movie last weekend, and loved it.

I got an important message out of it, that I hope you caught/catch too (I promise no spoilers!)

…but before I get into that, please let me know if you relate to having something become your entire personality because you found so much joy in it

— case point #1: after the Taylor Swift eras tour (that a client invited me to a WEEK before the show), I listened to that show playlist for a month straight

— case point #2: after seeing Barbie this past weekend, I dove into Trixie Mattel’s YouTube videos on the history of Barbie, looked into purchasing a Barbie (hats off to collectors but really Allison, what are you going to do with it after that?!?), and asked my mom, “Do you remember which Barbies I loved playing with?”, to which she responded, “Sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t”

Needless to say, you either relate to me, or you are perhaps entertained with people like me.

Anyway,

after the movie, my friends and I sat outside and asked what we thought the over-arching theme or message was:

There was many (these are my opinions/observations, I’m allowed to have them):

the history of Barbie; how she created dreams & unrealistic comparisons (you can be two things at once!) how the Patriarchy effects marginalized groups, and how it effects men as well, feminism is equality at it’s finest, and, not everything has to be centered on a romantic love story, to me there was still love, but in a different, refreshing way.

One message that really resonated with me, was when “standard Barbie” (Margot) questioned her purpose / worth.

I promised I wouldn’t spoil anything, so I won’t go much further from there. However, it brings me back to something I work on with myself:

Who am I beyond my job/career title?

To me, that question has been a big one. So much of my importance has been tied to what I do.

And while helping other’s brings me the deepest joy, I remember I am enough because of who I am.

I am enough because of the values I carry, that make me, me.

My values as a person are my identity and my purpose, not a career title.

On this Thursday, I hope you remember you are enough as you are because of the values you bring to the world.

xxx,

Allison
